Caulfield Autumn Classic

The Group 2 Caulfield 2015 Autumn Classic is held in late February or early March each year at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, as part of the autumn racing season.

The 2016 Caulfield Autumn Classic will be run on the 27th of February 2016 on Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes Day.

The Autumn Classic is raced over 1800m under set weight conditions, and is open only to three year olds.

Taking place on the same day as the Group one Futurity Stakes, the Autumn Classic is considered a useful race for the three-year-olds who take part as it is one of the runners’ first opportunities to race over a mile in the season.

Also taking place in Melbourne is the $6 million Melbourne Cup, which takes place as part of the spring racing carnival.

History:

Originating as a Principal Race in 1957, the Caulfield Autumn Classic heightened to a Listed race in 1979 and continued to gain status becoming a Group three race from 1989 – 1990 before reaching its current Group 2 status.

Over the years some top class horses have taken out the Autumn Classic including Stokehouse (2009), Elvstroem (2004), Dignity Dancer (1999), Triscay (1991) and Stylish Century (1990).

Race Name Changes:

The Autumn Classic has had over eight name changes throughout its history, as listed below.

1957 – 1986 the race was known as the Stanley Plate

1987 – 1990 called the Caulfield Autumn Classic

1991 became the Tattersall’s Classic for one year

1992 – 1997 the race reverted back to the Caulfield Autumn Classic

1998 – 2000 changed to the AAMI Classic with the change of sponsorship

2001 – 2004 known as the Shannon’s Classic

2005 – 2007 the race again reverted back to the Caulfield Autumn Classic

2008 titled the Pol Roger Stakes

2009 the race was known as the Yalumba 160.

2010 it was the Caulfield Autumn Classic.

Lead Up Races:

The Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes, run over 1600 metres at Moonee Valley in January, is considered the main lead-up race for the Caulfield Autumn classic, with punters keenly watching how horses perform at Moonee Valley in anticipation for the Autumn Classic race.

Although not as high profile as the races that form the Spring Racing Carnival in October and November annually, the Caulfield autumn races are some of the central runs in the autumn racing season. Caulfield racecourse is one of Melbourne’s top racing tracks and is most commonly known for the spring races held there including the Caulfield Guineas and the Caulfield Cup.

Race Record:

Cent Home, a New Zealand galloper, holds the Caulfield Autumn Classic race record with a time of 1:47.19 that was set in 2001.
