The Autumn Classic is raced over 1800m under set weight conditions, and is open only to three year olds.

Taking place on the same day as the Group one Futurity Stakes, the Autumn Classic is considered a useful race for the three-year-olds who take part as it is one of the runners’ first opportunities to race over a mile in the season.

Also taking place in Melbourne is the $6 million Melbourne Cup, which takes place as part of the spring racing carnival.

Originating as a Principal Race in 1957, the Caulfield Autumn Classic heightened to a Listed race in 1979 and continued to gain status becoming a Group three race from 1989 – 1990 before reaching its current Group 2 status.

Over the years some top class horses have taken out the Autumn Classic including Stokehouse (2009), Elvstroem (2004), Dignity Dancer (1999), Triscay (1991) and Stylish Century (1990).
