This Saturday, February 27, Melbourne’s picturesque Caulfield Racecourse is set to host its 2010 Futurity Stakes Day that will be host to $180, 000 Group 2 Caulfield Autumn Classic (1800m).
15 top three-year-olds have been nominated for the 2010 Autumn Classic including the David Hayes-trained Extra Zero and two entries for prolific trainer Peter Moody – Salinas and Speedy Natalie.
Son of Danzero, Extra Zero has won only one of his ten career starts but is slowly improving and is a solid middle distance galloper.
A noted absentee from the nominations is Peter Snowden’s boom three-year-old Denman, who ran last week instead in the Group 2 D’Urban Stakes at Caulfield where he claimed an impressive victory.
There is a lot of hype surrounding Robert Hickmott’s Autumn Classic nominee Linton. The brilliant grey Galileo gelding has won two of his three career starts, including a remarkable last-start victory in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley.
Hickmott has also nominated the star three-year-old for the Group 1 Futurity Stakes on Saturday as has David Hayes for Extra Zero.
Other quality nominees in the Autumn Classic include the Danny O’Brien-trained CS Hayes Stakes winner Take The Rap who placed second to Linton in the Alister Clarke Stakes on February 13.
Flemington trainer O’Brien also has his filly Pins On Ice entered in the Caulfield Autumn Classic.
Nine great races are scheduled for the day with the meeting’s headline race, the $500, 000 Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1600m) running as race seven.
The final field for the 2010 Caulfield Autumn Classic will be announced later in the week and published here.
